On behalf of the Oceania Rugby Board, it is with deep sadness that we extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of our colleague, friend - Andrew Joseph Conway (Andy), a true pioneer of Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU) – now known as Oceania Rugby.
Andy's visionary leadership and passion for rugby have left an indelible mark on our rugby community. As one of the founding members of FORU (Oceania Rugby), his relentless efforts helped shape and establish the foundation upon which our organisation stands today.
He was instrumental in the development of rugby in the Pacific and served as our treasurer from 2000 – 2013. Andy stepped down as Treasurer of FORU in 2013 at the AGM in Fiji. He was presented a "Tanoa", a ceremonial Fijian Kava bowl especially crafted for the occasion, by the FORU (Oceania Rugby) Executive and Membership in recognition of his immense contribution to the growth of rugby in the Pacific Islands.
Andy was dedicated to promoting schools’ rugby and played a crucial role in establishing connections between Australian schools’ rugby and their counterparts in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. He was a key figure in organising the Pacific Schools Rugby Conference, held in Lautoka, Fiji in 2004. This conference aimed to foster schoolboy tours between Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. The event became a catalyst for significant growth in schoolboy rugby tours throughout the region.
Andy's guidance and mentorship have inspired countless young athletes and coaches, shaping them into exceptional rugby players and confident individuals. His legacy of sportsmanship, integrity, and perseverance will continue to inspire our future generations.
Beyond his contributions to FORU (Oceania Rugby), Andy touched the lives of many individuals through his kindness, generosity, and warm spirit. He was not only a respected sports figure but also a remarkable human being who brought joy and inspiration to those fortunate enough to know him.
As we mourn the loss of Andrew Joseph Conway, let us also celebrate the incredible impact he had on rugby in Oceania. His passion and love for the sport will forever resonate within our rugby community. We are eternally grateful for his dedication and unwavering belief in the power of rugby to unite, inspire, and transform lives.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Andy's family and loved ones during this difficult time.
May He Rest in Peace and his contributions to the sport and his unwavering dedication will forever be cherished.
