Oceania Rugby has commenced the next phase of its women’s leadership development work through the Rise Rugby Governance Strategy and Coaching Programme, supporting women across the Pacific to further strengthen their governance and strategic leadership skills.

The programme brings together 25 women leaders from across Oceania Rugby’s member unions, all of whom previously graduated from the Rise Rugby Governance and Mentoring Programme, where they developed the foundational knowledge and skills required to contribute effectively to governance within sporting organisations.

Building on that foundation, this next stage focuses on deepening participants’ understanding of strategy, leadership and board-level decision-making. Through a series of facilitated sessions, participants will explore key governance topics including strategic thinking, organisational leadership and the role boards play in guiding the long-term success of sporting organisations.

Oceania Rugby General Manager, Frank Puletua said “The Oceania Rugby Executive Committee are committed to supporting the growth and professional development of women from across our region. Through the support of the Australian Government towards the Rise Rugby Governance Programme, we are witnessing first-hand the amazing impact women are having at all levels of our game.”

The programme is delivered in partnership with the Institute of Directors New Zealand, with experienced facilitators guiding participants through practical discussions and real-world governance scenarios relevant to the Pacific sporting context.

Oceania Rugby Women’s Rugby Programmes Manager, Sheridan Graham-Tupaea said the programme represents an important continuation of the leadership journey for women who are already contributing to rugby governance across the region.

“We were incredibly proud of the women who participated in the first phase of the Rise Rugby Governance Programme, where they developed strong foundations in governance principles and leadership.

“This next stage allows us to continue supporting their journey by strengthening their strategic thinking and building the confidence needed to contribute at board and leadership level within rugby organisations.”

Women’s representation in sports governance remains a challenge globally, and across the Pacific there is growing recognition of the importance of ensuring women are represented in decision-making roles that shape the future of the game.

By investing in continued leadership development opportunities, Oceania Rugby aims to support more women to step into governance and leadership positions across the region.

The Rise Rugby Governance Strategy and Coaching Programme reflects Oceania Rugby’s broader commitment to building stronger, more inclusive sporting organisations and ensuring women across the Pacific are equipped with the skills, networks and confidence to lead.

The program forms part of Oceania Rugby's partnership with the Australian Government's Pacific Aus Sports program, which strengthens opportunities for women and girls in rugby across the Pacific.
