Tonga claim first win of PacificAus Sports 2022 Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy

The Tongan Under 20 team have claimed a win on home soil in a dominating second half against Jnr Manu Samoa in the first match of the PacificAus Sports 2022 Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy.

Opening the scoring with a successful penalty kick in the 3rd minute of the game Tonga went into halftime down by 16 points (3 - 19) after an accurate first half off the boot of the Samoan Vice Captain Tauvaga Kolega who converted one try and four penalties.

Emerging after the break Tonga took some time in scoring their first try, eventually crossing the line in the 57min shortly before the first of two yellow cards shown to the Samoan team.

Three second half tries and a successful conversion, all unanswered saw the Tongan team snatch a one point victory over Samoa to taking the lead in the competition.

Through the support of the Australian Government’s PacificAus Sports program the 2022 Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy increased to a two-match competition. PacificAus Sports works to create greater engagement between Australia and the Pacific through our shared love of sport by developing pathways for Pacific teams and athletes to play in high-level Australian sporting competitions; for Australian sporting codes to increase their presence in the Pacific; and for emerging athletes to benefit from Australian training and competitions

Both teams will return to Teufaiva Sport Stadium on Saturday 3rd November for the final match of the tournament. the match will be broadcast on Pacifika TV
