Samoa Tops Get into Rugby Activities in February and March.
Introduced in 2021 the Oceania Rugby Get Into Rugby Monthly Union Spotlight is an initiative by Oceania Rugby to acknowledge and highlight the regional National Rugby Unions that are committed towards building their own player, coach and match officials’ pathways.
Through the introduction, expansion and promotion of copious skills programs, rugby festivals and competitions Lakapi Samoa was declared the Oceania Get Into Rugby Monthly Union Spotlight for the months of February and March.
For the month of February Samoa has a total of 103 Get Into Rugby Activities:
- 72 TRY Activities
- 31 PLAY Activities
Resulting in 1947 Boys and 1266 Girls participating for a total of 3213 participants recorded during February.
Following 4 weeks of skills development in schools and communities by the Lakapi Samoa Development Officers and volunteers, during February, 6 TRY and PLAY festivals and 5 age group STAY Competitions were held in March. This resulted in Samoa recording the highest number of Get Into Rugby Activities throughout the region in March with a total of 108 Activities:
- 81 TRY Activities
- 27 PLAY Activities
The month of March saw 3337 boys and 2787 Girls participate resulting in an overall of 6123 participants.
Oceania Rugby’s Participation and Pathways Manager, Tihrani Uluinakauvadra, applauded the commitment, passion and work of the Lakapi Samoa Rugby Development Union.
‘The work of the National Development Manager, Tui Komiti, and his Development Unit together with their volunteers has been outstanding in the last two months. It demonstrates great execution of their development plans and a solidarity in the team to reach out to many schools and communities to achieve these results’, Uluinakauvadra said.
Each month the Oceania Rugby Get Into Rugby Monthly Union Spotlight Union will receive vouchers worth $NZD100.
The April Spotlight Union will be an interesting contest between Unions like Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa and Vanuatu, all of whom have recorded a series of Get Into Rugby activities to date.
