Honiara, Solomon Islands – The Solomon Islands’ capital is set to host the highly anticipated Oceania Rugby 7s in December, further solidifying its status as a premier destination for world-class sporting events. Following the successful 2023 Pacific Games and other regional tournaments, Honiara is embracing its growing reputation as a hub for sports, culture, and tourism in the Pacific.

This achievement has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Solomon Islands Government, the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation, Tourism Solomons, Solomon Host, local stakeholders, and the support of Oceania Rugby.

In a unique partnership, Oceania Rugby is working alongside Tourism Solomons and Solomon Host to highlight the beauty and charm of the Solomon Islands.

Oceania Rugby President Richard Sapias echoed the excitement: "Honiara has demonstrated its capability as a premier sporting destination, thanks to the incredible success of the Pacific Games and ongoing regional events. We are thrilled to bring the Oceania Rugby 7s here, an event that not only celebrates the sport but also highlights the Solomon Islands’ tourism potential."

Describing the event as a landmark moment for the Solomon Islands,  Tourism Solomons CEO (Acting), Dagnal Dereveke said the significance of the event, to be watched by a world-wide audience, offered a “huge opportunity” to cement the destination in place  as a premier venue for sports tourism following its successful staging of the 2023 Pacific Games.

“We have proven our ability to host major events and the economic impact for our tourism sector is evident, with many of those attending staying to explore our  islands,” Mr Dereveke said.

Miss Solomon Islands, Ms. Polosovai, who will attend the Oceania Rugby 7s programs, shared her thoughts on the event's significance: "The Oceania Rugby 7s is more than just a tournament; it is an opportunity to show the world what the Solomon Islands has to offer. From our breathtaking islands to our rich traditions, Honiara is ready to shine on the global stage. We’re honored to be part of this momentous occasion."

The event promises an exhilarating showcase of elite rugby, attracting teams from across the region. It also provides a platform to promote Solomon Islands’ unique tourism offerings, with Tourism Solomons and Solomon Host leveraging the occasion to boost the nation’s global visibility.

The Solomon Islands, an archipelago of over 900 islands in the Pacific, offers unparalleled natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage, making it an ideal destination for hosting international events like the Oceania Rugby 7s.

With a land area of 28,400 square kilometers, it is home to stunning landscapes, including East Rennell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and world-famous diving spots such as Marovo Lagoon. The nation’s vibrant culture is reflected in its 70+ languages and traditions, adding depth to the visitor experience.

Tourism and sports are key pillars of development for the Solomon Islands. The country welcomes approximately 30,000 visitors annually and is actively working to increase this through ecotourism and adventure travel campaigns.

Honiara is poised to welcome players, fans, and visitors with unmatched enthusiasm and hospitality, cementing its reputation as the Pacific’s go-to destination for sports and cultural experiences.
