Manu Samoa U20s defeated Tonga 36 points nil to win the 2020 Oceania Rugby Under 20s Trophy and qualify for the World Rugby U20s Trophy in September.
The host side scored three tries in the first half and two in the second half to seal their win and the title following their defeat to Tonga in their previous match up in 2018.
Samoa Captain East Timor Fa’amatuainu said that the game was tough despite the points tallied at the end as they had to work hard to get the win.
“We had put a lot of effort into it as we knew Tonga was quite a strong team, so we worked on our set pieces and managed to work it well and we came out with a good result,” Fa’amatuainu said.
He added that despite the wet conditions, the team had prepared for the fixture well as the country had experienced quite strong winds and heavy rain in the week.
“We’ve trained a lot in the rain so for us it was a good run to get out there and put what we’ve practiced into the game,” Fa’amatuainu said.
“I’m really happy right now and more than proud for the boys as we have qualified,” he said.
We trained hard and I know we deserved the win with three to four months in preparation, we are very happy with the win and qualifying for the World Rugby Under 20s Trophy,” Fa’amatuainu said.
Samoa qualifies for the World Rugby Under 20s Trophy that will be from the 14-27 of September this year in Spain.
